Concussion Management

Our BUMP Concussion Management Program

Our concussion management program, BUMP (Before U May Play), provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for individuals suffering from a recent concussion and from post-concussion syndrome. We explain the proper management of the injury to athletes and prescribe any needed medications and treatments to control or improve symptoms. When fully recovered, athletes are medically cleared for safe return to play. We use state-of-the-art computerized neurocognitive assessment tools to ensure every patient is evaluated using the best technology available today. We offer ImPACT testing for baseline and post-concussion assessment of cognitive function in athletes to assist in safe return to play. Our physicians can treat patients’ according to their base-line test results, even if they received the test at another medical facility.

Quick Facts

ImPACT Testing

ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is a widely used sophisticated concussion evaluation system. The ImPACT system assists our physicians in returning athletes to the sports they love as quickly and safely as possible. The test takes approximately 25 minutes to complete and measures various cognitive functions including:

Importance of Baseline Testing for Athletes

The ImPACT system acts as a valuable resource for athletes at high risk for experiencing concussions. ImPACT’s baseline test measures an athlete’s normal brain activity prior to injury, which aids physicians to both diagnose a concussion and clear the patient for safe play. It is crucial that athletes do not return to play before completely symptom-free in order to minimize the risk of Second Impact Syndrome. Baseline tests assists doctors in making the safest decisions in the timeliest manner.

Return to Safe Play Guidelines

In order for an athlete to return to play they need to:

It is extremely important to recognize and treat concussions as soon as possible. Untreated and/or recurring concussions may result in long-term brain damage.
